Unusual church tucked away in the side streets
These gardens, on what was once an man-made island which is still known to locals four centuries on as the New Ground, were once the pride of the town. Although the seasonal planting, much of it the hard work of volunteers, can still impress visitors, the District Council has been so neglecting the area badly in recent years that they are a sorry shadow of their past glory. They have also wrecked most of the hedges and shrubs and chopped down the trees that used to make this such a tranquil and beautiful spot - these days you are constantly aware of traffic on all sides. At the time of writing there is a plan to devolve the gardens' management back to the town, so one can but hope for an improvement.
